This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the theoretical background of the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) formulation and its industrial applications in Ansys LS-DYNA® nonlinear dynamics structural simulation software. Applications are covered across defense, aerospace, automotive, and consumer product industries. The course emphasizes selecting the appropriate SPH formulation for various fluid and solid material applications. To demonstrate different SPH features, the course includes a workshop with approximately 30 Ansys LS-DYNA input examples, covering all relevant keywords and contact entities. Contact interactions between SPH and FEM parts, as well as between different SPH parts, are illustrated in 3D, 2D, and 2D axisymmetric scenarios. Additionally, the workflow for setting up SPH problems in Ansys LS-PrePost is discussed.

Learning Outcomes:

Following completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental theory behind SPH, including its advantages and limitations, with a particular focus on aerospace and defense applications.
  • Set up an SPH model to analyze high-deformation phenomena, such as bird strike or high-velocity impacts.
  • Utilize advanced capabilities such as SPH-FEM coupling, adaptivity, thermal coupling, and fluid-specific formulations to accurately and efficiently model complex scenarios.
  • Postprocess SPH results and extract valuable insights from simulations.

Prerequisites:

  • Completion of Introduction to Ansys LS-DYNA Software course is required.
