When designing a physical product, one must select the right material for the job. But thousands of engineering materials exist — how can we as designers and engineers logically and systematically choose the right material based on our design requirements?
In this course on Basic Systematic Materials Selection, we introduce the Materials Selection methodology, first published by Professor Mike Ashby, and demonstrate how this can be used with Ansys Granta EduPack during the design process to select materials alongside simulation and other techniques.
This course will cover:
The design process, as stated in Mike Ashby’s book “Materials Selection in Mechanical Design”
The Materials Selection Methodology
How to apply constraints and objectives using Ansys Granta EduPack
An example case study of materials selection for a heat sink and how this can be used alongside simulation
Please use this handout to follow along with the course content. References, such as the Materials Selection in Mechanical Design textbook, and relevant links can be found in the Relevant Links segment of the course.
A course completion badge allows you to showcase your success. We partner with the Credly Acclaim platform, and digital badges can be used in email signatures, digital resumes and social media sites. The digital image contains verified metadata that describes your participation in our course and the topics and skills that were covered. This badge is for successfully completing the Basic Systematic Materials Selection course.
