A major aspect of gas turbine design is the primary path airfoils (compressor and turbine blades). These airfoils provide the necessary work to increase pressure in the compressor region and to extract energy in the turbine section and are designed to stringent limits to meet efficiency targets.

In order to provide value to customers, these airfoils are designed to withstand any vibrational responses that they may see during operational conditions without mechanically failing. The primary source of vibrational excitation comes from harmonic disturbances in the airflow (wakes from upstream nozzle vanes, distortion patterns, etc). Analysis to determine the magnitude of vibrational excitation is known as forced response analysis.

In this course, you will learn how to solve problems of Forced Response of Cyclic and Mistuned Cyclic Structures using Ansys Mechanical™ structural finite element analysis software. The ability to use results from Transient Blade Row (TBR) simulations conducted using Ansys CFX® computational fluid dynamics software adds efficiency to the workflow demonstrated throughout this course.

Learning Outcomes:

Following completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Import and map pressures from a TBR simulation performed in Ansys CFX software at specified engine orders.
    • Apply the workflow required to perform forced response analysis, including conducting an Inverse Solution to obtain cold fan blade geometry from a hot fan blade configuration, obtain cold temperature and pressure maps for use in a prestressed modal analysis, and set up a tuned forced harmonic response analysis at given engine orders.
    • Include the effects of aerodynamic coupling and mistuning.

Prerequisites:

  • Completion of the following Ansys Mechanical Linear and Nonlinear Dynamics courses is required
  • Some knowledge of the Ansys Parametric Design Language (APDL)™ finite element modeling tool is helpful but not required

Please note: These training materials were developed and tested in the 2024R2 release.
