We have an exciting announcement about badges coming in May 2025. Until then, we will temporarily stop issuing new badges for course completions and certifications. However, all completions will be recorded and fulfilled after May 2025.

In a single-surface contact that includes several parts, how to specify a different coefficient of friction between certain parts?

A different coefficient of friction (COF) can be specified between a pair of parts or pair of part sets of a single-surface contact by setting FS = -2 on the *CONTACT keyword and by referencing a *DEFINE_FRICTION keyword ID through FD field. Please see Manual Vol I for the supported contact types. The *DEFINE_FRICTION keyword is interpreted as follows. – If FS = -2 and FD = 1 on *CONTACT, the COF is defined by the *DEFINE_FRICTION keyword with ID = 1. – For all parts included in the SSID set referenced by the single-surface *CONTACT but not included in the part set PIDi or PIDj of *DEFINE_FRICTION the COF is equal to the FS_D on *DEFINE_FRICTION. – The COF is equal to the FS_IJ (of *DEFINE_FRICTION) when a part included in set PIDi comes into contact with parts that belong to set PIDj. – For contact in-between the parts of the set PIDi, the COF is FS_D. Likewise, the COF is FS_D for contact in-between the parts of the set PIDj.
