      2D shell elements are like SHELL208 element and 3D shell elements are SHELL181 or SHELL281. These elements have composite capabilities however right now only 3D shells are supported by Workbench Mechanical. Also Workbench Mechanical supports only shell composite simulation directly or though ANSYS Composite Prepost (ACP).
