Hello everyone,
I use ANSYS Workbench for my master thesis and I am a beginner in using ANSYS.
I want to optimize a part for additive manufacturing. For the part an aluminium alloy (AlSi10Mg) should be used. The part will have an approximately transversal isotropic material behaviour due to the additive manufacturing process.
Is it possible to create such a material behavior in ANSYS Workbench for the analysis with a static structural analysis system?Â
If so, is it possible to define any direction for the preferred direction of the transversely isotropic material of the part? Due to the later part orientation in the build space of the 3D printer it is possible that the construction direction of the part does not correspond to one of the axes of the global coordinate system of the part and therefore the material coordinate system would differ from the global coordinate system of the part.
If it is not possible to generate transversely isotropic material behavior in ANSYS Workbench for the analysis with a static structural analysis system, an orthotropic material behavior would also be acceptable.
If the orientation of the part has to be changed for the printing process and the axes of the global coordinate system of the part do not match the orthotropy axes of the material, is it possible to define a material coordinate system for orthotropic material that is parallel to the orthotropy axes?Â
I would be very grateful for your help in this matter.

Hi,
There is no Transversely Isotropic material available, but you can define Orthotropic material. You can define a Local Coordinate System in the Tree Outline and use that to define the orientation of the material properties. The Local Coordinate system can be defined to be independent of the Global Coordinate system. Once you define the Local Coordinate System, go to the Component in Geometry --> Details-->Definition-->Coordinate System--> Choose the Local Coordinate System you just defined.

Thany you very much for your quick response. This information is very useful! I just have two questions about this.
How can I use the Local Coordinate System to define the orientation of the material properties?
And how can I make the Local Coordinate System independent form the Global Coordinate System?

Hello,Â
I have two questions please;
1. how can i define a 45° oriented youngs modulus of a material ? is it possible with the orthotropic model definition ? Since with orthotropic modelling we just have orthogonal axes (90°) --> I have the youngs modulus in longitudinale direction, transverse direction and oblige(45°) direction. I can input the longitudinale direction(x) and transverse direction(y,z) what about the 45° ?
2. can i assigned 2 material property in ansys which are reference to two different coordinate system? ( exemple i wish to define two local coordinates system with different orientations, then assigne orthotropic properties to each coordinates systems)
