Remote Displacement vs APDL Tie (TARGE170/CONTA175) – Different Results

      Hi all,

      Could anyone help me clarify the difference between an ANSYS Remote Displacement and the APDL tie constraint using TARGE170 and CONTA175?

      I have tried both approaches and obtained different results, so I would appreciate any insight into why this happens and when each method should be used.

      Hello,

      A Remote Displacement and a TARGE170/CONTA175 tie constraint both connect parts of a model, but they work differently. A Remote Displacement connects a group of nodes to a remote reference point and transfers loads and motions through that point, making it useful for representing fixtures, bearings, actuators, or loads applied at a known location. A tie constraint using TARGE170 and CONTA175 is a surface-to-surface connection that directly enforces compatibility between two contacting regions, typically for bonded interfaces or nonmatching meshes. Because the load transfer and constraint equations are different, the stiffness, moment transfer, and stress distribution can also be different, which is why you are seeing different results. In general, use Remote Displacement when a physical reference point exists, and use a tie constraint when you need to bond two surfaces together and make them act as a continuous structure.
