I tried creating similar geometry and tried to mesh it and I got mesh as per the first image. Do you see any warning while meshing in messages?
Can you try inserting a method by right clicking on mesh and use sweep method for meshing? Also, check the default method for meshing set in your system. Go to File>options> meshing>default method and check if it set to patch conforming/sweep, which should be default.
