SubscriberHi,
In my Maxwell 3D project, I have a copper coil and permanent magnet. Both solids are stationary. The coil is excited by DC current.
1. Which workflow do you recommend (for beginners) if I wish to generate a plot of temp vs time for the coil? please be detailed.
2. Should the Maxwell solution setup be transinet or magnetostatic?
3. Do I have to enable temp dependancy for the coil?
I am familiar with most AEDT thermal coupling workflows (workbench and stand-alone), however, unsure which one is the best match for my project.

Ansys EmployeeHi,

AEDT Maxwell Magnetostatic coupling with Workbench transient thermal.
2. Should the Maxwell solution setup be transinet or magnetostatic?Magnetostatic is good enough.
3. Do I have to enable temp dependancy for the coil?Yes if you would like the results to be more accurate.

SubscriberThank you for the clarification. I have a few more questions for the same setup, where I want the PM to be fixed and the coil is the moving object.
My questions are about setting up the Transient Solver for this setup:
1. For the “Coil Terminal Excitation” should the number of conductors be set to 1 if we chose “Solid” type for the winding?

2. I have noticed that in most Maxwell transient simulation tutorials and workshops on the ALH, the parameter “number of turns” for the coil winding is not defined or mentioned. This was not the case for Magnetostatic simulations. Why is this?
3. For motion setup assignment, I made sure that the coil is contained by a cylindrical band of motion. How do I determine the “Translation Limit” and “Velocity” parameters when I want to solve for the speed and postion of the coil. When the PM is fixed, once the coil is excited, depending on the polarity of the input current, the coil will either attract or repel the PM.
