license server problems

      The ansys license server is installed on my office machine.  I have downloaded and installed Ansys Zemax Opticstudio on my home machine.  I have run Ansys licensing client settings, and it succeeds in contacting the server from my home machine, but when I put that licensing data in on starting Ansys Zemax Opticstudio, it says:

      No Ansys products were detected.  Check the license settings in the License Utility on the help tab.

      When I google that error message, at

      it says:

      This means the license subscription is no longer valid or the license was renewed but not updated on your organization's license server. Contact your IT department, your Zemax account representative or open a Zemax support case for help.

      I have verified that the products are activated on the licensing server, so I am opening a Zemax support case.

      Hi Kenneth,

      • Through client-side open the 'Ansys Licensing Client Settings' (run as admin) from the 'Ansys Zemax OpticStudio 202x Rx.00' through the START menu.
      • Click on License Serverà Mention the port no. and servername/hostnameàclick on the test to check if a green check mark appearsà save it.
      • Features in Use options should show all the licenses available on the Ansys License Manager.
      • The Shared Web Licensing option should be off or else you will face an error while launching the Ansys Zemax application.
      • Launch the application.

      OK, the first two bullets work: I get the check mark.  But on "features in use" I get:

      lmgrd is not running: License server machine is down or not responding. (-96,7:11001 "WinSock: Host not found (HOST_NOT_FOUND)")

      But, if the machine is not responding, how can the server test have worked?

      Hi Kenneth,

      Please try the following suggestions:

      • Please add entries to the hosts file : (Please take help from your IT team to add the server IP entry and save the hosts file which needs admin access)

      Open the HOSTS file on the client machine and add the license server name and IP of the license server in that hosts file.

      First, launch command prompt and ping freyr (you will get your IP address of server) open a fresh notepad as admin and follow the below path 

      Path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file “ as per the following format in your client machine :

      Example: 
      IP address                Hostname of server           Fully Qualified Domain Name                               xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx                    freyr                            freyr.astro.wisc.edu          //IP address of server and server’s name. 

      This should be added in the last line.  

      Once the entry is added save the file.

      • Config File Reset -

       Now open a file explorer and type %appdata% in the address bar. 

       Locate the Ansys folder and rename it to Ansys.old.

      Now Relaunch the application to see if it loads without any issue. The Ansys License Manager should always be running while using the applications.

      OK, that got me farther.  Features in Use now says:

      Hi Kenneth,

      Follow the below steps and let me know the result:

      “Can you please provide the below information?

      1. At your end c, can you please confirm if you can ping and telnet the server.

      Go to the start menu and open the command prompt, and run the commands and send the screenshot of output: 

      1. ping servername 
      2. telnet servername portnumber (bydefault port number is 1055.)

      A blank screen will confirm that you are connected, if you get any other output, please provide a screenshot of the same.

      1. To ON telnet service go to start àsearch “Turn Windows feature on or off” àcheck box “Telnet Client” and click ok.
      1. The screenshot of the error you are facing.

      If you don't face any errors while performing the above steps then follow the next one.

      Can you add firewall exceptions to your servers?
      Check if firewall exceptions are added on the server end.

      In case you are running Windows firewall, let’s try to add a firewall exception in the license server:
       

      1. Start à Search for Control panel à System and security à Windows firewall defender.

      2.      Click on  “Allow an app or feature through Windows Firewall Defender”. It must be at the top left.

      3.      Click on “Allow another app” à Click on “Browse”.

      4.      Then browse through “C:\Program Files\ANSYS Inc\Shared Files\Licensing\winx64” and select “ansysli_client” or “ansysli_client.exe” à Click Open à Click “Add” to confirm.

       
      Follow steps 1 to 4 and add these 5 exceptions:

      §  lmgrd.exe

      §  ansyslmd.exe

      §  ansysli_server.exe

      §  ansysli_monitor.exe

      §  ansysli_client.exe

      I have already determined that pin (and just now i also verified telnet) are disabled on the server.  Do they need to be enabled for the server to work?  I have also forwarded the message to IT on-campus, so they can do any additional firewall exceptions as you list (they have already done some, per the original firewall instrictions)

      Hi Kenneth,

      Port no. 1055, and 2325 should be allowed for outgoings and incomings from the server as well as the client end.

      I understand that.  (Sorry, I'm no IT expert).  But does that mean ping and telnet need to also be enabled on the server?

      Try to open ports first, if still issue persists try to enable ping and telnet to check if there is connectivity.

      OK, success.  I can now open up Zemax, and can look at old files.  We set ansyslmd to sit on port 1056. Ports 1055, 1056, and 2325 have firewall holes.  Telnet works on all those.  Ping is not enabled, but that does not seem to matter.
