Difference between Autodyn standalone and Ansys/explicit dynamics plus Autodyn

Hi all, I'm trying to learn simulating hypervelocity impact by myself, I notice that most of the journal papers choose Autodyn. And my question is what's diference between using Autodyn standalone and using Ansys/ explicit dynamics plus Autosdyn? Also, which way is easier to model layered composite material?

      Hello Riley,

AUTODYN was with a separate company, and it was acquired by Ansys in 2005. The explicit dynamics within Ansys Workbench use the same AUTODYN code/solver on the backend. I believe all the features you have in AUTODYN standalone are already integrated into explicit dynamics.

I recommend you explore explicit dynamics, or I'll do one better, which is LS-DYNA.

Unfortunately, we can't answer any technical questions related to hypervelocity impact. Someone else from the forum can assist you in that regard.

There are a bunch of tutorials on YouTube regarding layered composites: LS-Dyna Tutorial - Modelling Composite Layers using single shell element with Part_stacked_Elements - YouTube

Please explore Ansys innovation courses; maybe be you can find something relevant.

      Regards,

      Nanda.

As my colleague said the Autodyn solver is used in the Explicit Dynamics system which is basically a pre and post processor for the Autodyn solver -
of course one can use Autodyn UI (very old interface - not easy to use)+ Autodyn Solver Standalone (Workbench - under Components system -  Autodyn system).

For a new user i is generally easier to use the Autodyn solver via Explicit Dynamics system in Workbench.

      All the best

      Erko
