Hello everyone,
I am having problems with Ansys Mechanical. I just can't get the software to run. Whether I start the software individually or from Workbench, the loading screen opens, but then the software always freezes at the following screen.
I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the software several times using the Ansys uninstaller (of course, restarting in between). During the first installation, I got an error message that Microsoft Visual C++ 2019 (X64 and X86) could not be installed because both were already installed. I then uninstalled both before installation (restarted) and then it worked and both packages were installed by Ansys. I don't think that's the problem. My PC should have enough power, so that shouldn't be the problem either (i9 12900K, RTX 3060, 32 GB Ram). I am using Windows 11 and Ansys 2024 R1 (Student version).
I really don't know what to do anymore. I haven't found anything in this direction here in the forum, if I overlooked a post, please correct me. I would be happy about a few suggestions for solutions.
If you have any further questions, please let me know!
Thank you already!
Best regards,
Jonas

Hi Jonas,
Please goto .ansys folder (%temp%) and check the file which is named *.MECH.241.out, look out for errors or denied message in that file, and if possible scroll all the way and send the screenshot of the logs.
Also, please rename the Ansys folder (%appdata%) and check in your event viewer if it has any errors when application is launched. Go to START > Event Viewer > Expand the Windows Logs and choose Application.
Are you able to launch other applications like Spaceclaim, discovery?

Thank you very much for your reply. Here is a screenshot of the ...MECH.241 file. I am not very familiar with it and can't do much with it and couldn't directly find an error that could be related to my problem. Maybe you can do more with it.
I renamed the Ansys folder in %appdata% to Ansys_old.
When I restart from Workbench, the Design Query appears and then Mechanical crashes. I also noticed that a small window called "Import Material" from Mechanical opened, but it was just black.
After a few minutes, I terminated the program in the Task Manager.
An error appeared in the Event Viewer: The program AnsysWBU.exe version 24.2023.331.1 has stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. For more information about the problem, see the problem history in the Control Panel "Security and Maintenance".
Here are some screenshots of the error:
I have never used Discovery before. But I was able to start the software and everything looks normal and I can interact with the program.
SpaceClaim also starts normally and works.
I also noticed that Workbench does not have an icon in my taskbar. Instead of the icon, there is a placeholder. Mechanical, Discovery and SpaceClaim all had icons in the taskbar. I don't know if this is relevant, but I wanted to mention it for completeness.
Thank you again for your help. I hope my answers are helpful. If not, please feel free to write. -

Hi Jonas,
I have seen this issue recently and I don't have any solutions at the moment where import material screen is shown in taskbar. Please wait till I have the solution, will let you know once I have any information.
You can try to do product config (C:\Program Files\ANSYS Inc\ANSYS Student\v241) as admin, unconfigure first and then configure or re-install the program, but I am not positive about this solutions cause it didn't work for the user who had this issue.
Also, can you goto Mechanical in start menu> open file location> again right-click and open file location> it will take you to AnsysWBU.exe >double click on it and send the screenshot of screen.

Hi Jonas,
Can you try to set this environment variable ANSYS_MECHANICAL_BROWSER = 0 under system environment variable.

I did everything and now it works. Thank you very much!
Unfortunately, I did everything one after the other and cannot say exactly which tip finally solved the problem, but Mechanical started without errors and showed me my imported geometry. I hope that the problem is now completely solved. If the error occurs again, I will report back.
Thank you very much for the tips and the final solution!
