SubscriberSoftware: Ansys Maxwell 2021R1
Solver Type: Electrostatic Solver - 2D - Around Z axis (rotational - axis symmetric)
Model: Simulation of an electrical cable termination
Simulation Setup: A cable that consists of the main conductor, a dielectric insulation and a shield layers is modeled. A vacuum region is also modeled.
- Boundary: none are applied to the model.
- Excitation: a voltage excitation is applied on the main conductor and a zero voltage excitation is applied on the shield
- Mesh: a really fine mesh inside selection is applied to the model geometries except for the vacuum region
- Analysis: the setup is set for 20 Pass and 0.5 Percent Error and 50% Refinement Per Pass
In the Convergence page, the Total Energy is at least in the order of 1E-8 (can down to 1E-33 ) and the Energy Error is at least 200% (and can go up to 1000%) and the Delta Energy is in the order of 30% (and can go up to 100%). To clarify, the numbers in parentheses are from different simulation runs where the previous results were deleted. The number of Triangles is in the order of 400E3 and the Energy Error is not converging.
An attempt to change the properties of the vacuum conductivity from zero to 1E-10 and 1E-18 to preserve the continuity equation (Similar to Comsol) but the simulation did not converge.
When the simulation is either aborted or finished, the Field results are plotted. The Voltage field plots show plain blue (in a rainbow colored map - everything is zero).
How can the convergence problem be solved?

Ansys EmployeeHi, the total energy 1E-8 ( to 1e-33) looks really low, the solver might struggle to converge something very small.
What's the material property for the main conductor?
How much voltage is assigned on the main conductor?

SubscriberHi The main conductor material is copper.
The voltage excitation assigned to the main conductor is 1 kV.

Ansys EmployeeCould you provide a screen shot of your cable design?
