2023 R1 shell to shell bonded contact problem

      Hi there, I'm hyeon min

Here's my model below and I want to do modal analysis. The version is ANSYS 2023 R1 .

The Blue and yellow lines are meaning 'Weld' function in mesh(batch connection)

      and contacts are below.

More easily, I explained the situation below.

There are 3 bonded contacts between 4 shell bodies(midsurface) and 2 bolt connection as beams on my model and I posted initial contact status below

Worksheet shows that only one bonded contact pair was closed(bonded well)

But the remaining 2 are not... they are 'inactive' as you can see on worksheet.

And also, the solution information said like below.

'NO CONTACT ELEMENTS EXIST FOR REGION'

Why contact elements are not generated?????

'Inactive' is not an error but also it is not what I want. because the bolt connections, they(shells) need to be bonded.

If not, shells penetrait each other.

I tried almost everything for resolving this problem.

      1. change formulation 'program controlled' to 'MPC'
      2. change pinball radius 4mm~20mm (each shell thickness is 4mm)
      3. changed normal stiffness
      4. turn off 'mesh defeaturing'
      5. change detection method
      6. change weld (weld leg)
      7. change mesh element size fine to coarse
      8. Shared topology is not what I want

      and so on.

But none of them resolved this 'inactive' problem.

Yes, I know inactive is not a problem that has to be solved but as I mensioned earlier, I need it because bolt connection between shells.

and also I fount that the info message '2 overlapping contact regions found' It means contact between frame 1 and 2, and contact

between frame 2 and 3 are in trouble. What does it mean that 'overlapping contact' and how can I solve it?

      Is there any other way?

      Thanks.

Hi are you using face-to-face contact for frame1 to frame2 and so on? Have you tried turning the shell thickness effect on, and also set the contact and target shell face manually instead of using program controlled:
