AutoCAD crashing when attempting to use Thermal Desktop tools

My team and I recently recieved thermal desktop licenses but are having trouble getting the software to work. Following both (on different computers) the 2024R2 and 2025R1 thermal desktop installation guide, AutoCAD boots, but crashes once a thermal desktop ribbon button is pressed, giving the following error.

My main suspect is the license not properly being checked out from the licensing server, as this error can be replicated even when a connection to the licensing server is not established. When connected to the license server, the licensing settings displays the green check mark next to the "test" button, indicating a connection, as seen below. This connection has also been verified in terminal using the "ping" command.

In the Ansys licensing portal, among other licenses, thermal desktop is listed on the page "The following products are activated on Host ID" on the screenshot below

However, no licenses appear to be borrowable in the licensing settings on the client computer. Any help would be appreciated, my team and I are eager to try anything.

      Hi,

My guess here is that Autocad was downloaded from Autodesk for academic? The issue is that the latest patch of Autocad (patch 8) which I believe is what will be downloaded from Autodesk directly for academic is not currently supported by TD. If you go to the Ansys Customer Downloads page, the Thermal Desktop 2025R2 download should include the installer for Autocad 2024 (its a 2 part installer). You should start by uninstalling the current Autocad version and then re-install using the supplied installer from the Ansys webpage, this version doesn't include the problematic patch 8. Please try this and let us know whether it fixes things.

      Hi Ian,
We tried out your recomendation for the AutoCAD install through the download center and it worked! Looks like we were running AutoCAD 2024 as reccomended, but not the correct version (we had 1.8). Thank you for the help!
