Analysis Groups in Ansys Lumerical FDTD — Lesson 4

Introduction to Analysis Groups

Analysis groups are mainly used to post-process the simulation results recorded by monitors. In this video lesson, you will learn how to add and set up an analysis group.

Using Analysis Groups from the Object Library

The following video demonstrates how to open and browse available analysis groups from the Object Library and add and edit them in your simulation file. The demonstration begins with a new FDTD Solutions project file.

Icon Name/Description

Transmission box
An analysis group that measures the power leaving the box.

Cross-section
An analysis group of power monitors for measuring scattering, absorption and extinction cross-sections.

Far-field from a closed box
This group determines the fields outside of a closed box by calculating the projections for each surface and then summing the results.

Directivity
This group calculates the directivity pattern and total radiated power of an antenna with or without an external antenna feed by using a monitor box.

Current charge density
This analysis group is used to calculate the charge and current density inside metals as well as the divergence of the electric field.

Optical force
This object calculates the photonic force by integrating the Maxwell Stress Tensor over a closed box around a particle.

Solar generation
This object calculates the electron-hole pair generation rate under solar illumination. It then exports the generation rate to Lumerical's DEVICE for further electrical simulation.

Bandstructure
This analysis group is used for band structure calculations. It returns a spectrum with peaks at resonant frequencies.

CW movie
This analysis group sets up monitors and exports the monitor field data to a MATLAB file. This data can then be converted to an AVI movie using MATLAB showing the steady-state field propagation.

Power absorption
This is an analysis group that measures the spatial absorption profile.

Grating order transmission
This object calculates the fraction of power transmitted to each grating order and calculates the number of propagating grating orders.

Q analysis
This analysis group measures the Q factor of a resonator. The fields decay very slowly and the quality factor is determined from the slope of the decaying envelope.
