This course covers the comprehensive understanding of multi-degree of freedom (MDOF) systems. It begins with the derivation of the equation of motion for an MDOF system, using the Lagrange equation and the concept of generalized coordinates. For instance, a two-story structure with varying masses, stiffness, and damping coefficients is used to illustrate the derivation of kinetic and potential energy, and the formation of the Lagrange equation. The course also delves into the concept of modal decomposition in vibrations, explaining the orthogonality of mode shapes with respect to mass and stiffness matrices. Lastly, the course provides a practical approach to modeling and solving an MDOF system using MATLAB, including eigen analysis, calculation of proportionality constants, and transformation of equations.
