This Application Best Practice (ABP) will follow the process to use adaption to capture the physics of interest (wakes, shocks, etc.) in the computational domain. Inside Ansys Fluent® fluid simulation software, pre-defined adaption criteria are built in with best practices to enable you to efficiently use adaption to speed up your simulation and increase workflow efficiency.

For this application best practice, you will need a geometry for external aerodynamics and corresponding operating conditions.

Learning Outcomes:

Following completion of this Application Best Practice (ABP), you will be able to:

  • Explain the importance and challenges of mesh adaption for external aerodynamics simulations, including its role in capturing physics such as shocks and wakes efficiently
  • Set up and configure solver and boundary conditions for external aerodynamics cases in Ansys Fluent software, using recommended turbulence models and flow conditions
  • Identify and select appropriate pre-defined adaption criteria (density-based, pressure-based, or error-based/Hessian) for refining computational meshes to capture specific physical phenomena
  • Activate and implement automatic mesh adaption using pre-defined criteria in Ansys Fluent software, including the use of Text User Interface (TUI) commands and graphical interface workflows
  • Monitor convergence and assess simulation progress by setting up suitable solution monitors (e.g., pressure probes, lift/drag)
  • Evaluate mesh adaption effectiveness by comparing numerical results and mesh refinement strategies with experimental or reference data for validation and efficiency assessment

Prerequisites:

  • Ansys Fluent Getting Started: Basics

Please note: These training materials were developed and tested in the 2021R2 release.

Application Best Practices (ABPs) outline engineering design goals for specific applications and provide guidance for how to achieve those goals using Ansys simulation software. It is important to note that a Geometry File or other Input Files are not always available. ABPs, as opposed to the official training-material workshops/tutorials, are not meant to be a step-by-step instruction document. ABPs are a link between product-based training courses and application specific tutorials, educating on the "how" and "why" of the best modeling approach, highlighting best practices and workflows for a particular application.
