Understanding Structural Dynamics and Vibrations

NPTEL

This course covers the fundamental concepts of structural dynamics and vibrations. It begins with an exploration of structural damping, where students learn about the role of energy loss in reducing deformation around resonance and the parameters that define energy loss capacity. The course then delves into forced vibration cases, explaining the governing equation of motion and the components of the total solution. Students will also study the dynamic response of a system excited by a harmonic force, learning about the transient and steady state responses, dynamic amplification, and resonance. The course further discusses the concept of dynamic amplification in structural vibrations, including the calculation of response due to support motion and the impact of sinusoidal forces. Finally, the course concludes with practical examples of systems with rotating components, such as a machine supported over a spring and a dashboard with a rotating part at its center.
