2-4 HOURS

NPTEL

width= width=This course covers the comprehensive study of salient pole alternators and their performance under a sudden three-phase short circuit. For instance, the course begins with the derivation of the salient pole alternator's equation and its equivalent circuit, followed by the simplification of stator voltage equations. It then delves into the analysis of the enclosed circuit and the derivation of various expressions, including direct axis reactants and operational reactants. The course also provides a numerical simulation of the alternator, demonstrating the current flow during a short circuit, and transient, and subtransient regions on plot. Furthermore, the course explores the assumptions, equation development, and manipulation involved in analyzing a three-phase short circuit. It also discusses the concept of stator resistance, the impact of speed on performance, and the alternator's behavior under a short circuit with IKD and IKQ currents.

This course has been developed by Prof. Krishna Vasudevan from IIT Madras for NPTEL. It is now accessible through Ansys Innovation Space courtesy of the partnership between Ansys and NPTEL, under the CC BY-SA license. For more details, visit https://nptel.ac.in/courses/108106023.
