For complicated structures, generating proper meshes with suitable refinements in highly stressed regions can be difficult. When these structures experience large deformation, large strain behavior, the challenge is compounded as the mesh deforms. Severe mesh deformation may lead to convergence difficulties, or even a solution failure attributed to poor element quality. In such cases, with suitable refinement criteria, nonlinear mesh adaptivity can overcome these challenges.

Nonlinear Mesh Adaptivity is a feature in Ansys Mechanical™ structural finite element analysis software that allows the modification of the mesh during the solution process based on specified criteria. This can be used to simulate problems that otherwise cannot be simulated or to improve the accuracy of simulation results. The adaptivity is completely automatic and requires no user input during the solution. It is available for both 2D and 3D analyses.

This course provides the information necessary to use Nonlinear Mesh Adaptivity to solve challenging nonlinear analyses undergoing large deformations.

Learning Outcomes:

Following completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Choose from a selection of different nonlinear mesh adaptivity criteria to initiate automatic remeshing during solution, thereby improving convergence behavior and simulation accuracy.

Please note: These training materials were developed and tested in the 2023 R2 release.
