A brushless permanent magnet (BPM) machine designed for a traction application is modeled in Ansys Motor-CAD® dedicated electric motor design tool for multiphysics simulation. We obtain detailed electromagnetic, thermal and mechanical performance results for a single operating point, efficiency maps showing the performance across the full operating range and combined electromagnetic and thermal performance for a complex drive cycle.

This tutorial introduces the capabilities of Ansys Motor-CAD and demonstrates an example workflow.

Learning Outcomes:

Following completion of this workshop, you will be able to:

    • Model a Brushless Permanent Magnet (BPM) traction motor in Ansys Motor-CAD software.
    • Analyze electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical performance at specific operating points and across the full operating range using efficiency maps.
    • Evaluate motor performance over a drive cycle by assessing combined electromagnetic and thermal behavior.
