Mechanical Design of Battery Packs

2-4 HOURS

NPTEL

width=This course covers the comprehensive aspects of mechanical design of battery packs. It begins with an understanding of the electrical design, capacity, voltage, and current requirements of a battery pack, using the example of an electric bike. The course then delves into the forces acting on a battery pack, such as compression, tension, shear, torsion, and bending, and how these forces determine the dimensions and thickness of the base plate. It also introduces the methodology for material selection and explains how to calculate the maximum deflection and stress in the base plate. The course further discusses the impact of vibration on a battery pack, the sources of vibration, and the effects of vibration on the battery pack. It concludes with a comparison of different standards used in India, and how to simulate harmonic vibration analysis to find mode of frequencies and shapes of side plate.

This course has been developed by Prof. Kaushal Kumar Jha from IIT Madras for NPTEL. It is now accessible through Ansys Innovation Space courtesy of the partnership between Ansys and NPTEL, under the CC BY-SA license. For more details, visit https://archive.nptel.ac.in/courses/108/106/108106182/.
