This course covers the comprehensive study of laminate failure and analysis. It delves into the micro-mechanical analysis of laminates, focusing on the failure analysis of a laminate. The course explains the relationship between force and moment resultants to the mid-surface strains and curvatures of a laminate. It also discusses the determination of stresses and strains in each lamina of a laminate for mechanical and hydrothermal loading. The course further explains the assessment of the failure or safety of each lamina in a laminate using appropriate failure theory strength. It also covers the two modes of failure: intra-laminar and inter-laminar. An illustrative example of calculating the first ply and last ply failure of a laminate is provided. The course also covers the hygro-thermo-mechanical analysis of laminate, explaining how to calculate the first ply failure load of a laminate under a thermal gradient of 50 degrees Celsius. It discusses the concept of residual stresses and strains induced in different lamina of a laminate due to temperature changes.
