This course covers the comprehensive process of fabricating metal matrix composites through additive manufacturing. It provides an in-depth understanding of conventional manufacturing techniques, the preparation of composite materials, and the factors influencing composite properties. For instance, the course illustrates how the size of the reinforcing element impacts microstructure densification, hardness, toughness, and wear. It also explores the role of additive manufacturing in creating unique structures with distinctive geometry, ideal for automotive, aerospace, and other industries. The course further discusses the selection of matrices and reinforcements, focusing on materials like iron, aluminum, titanium, and nickel. It concludes with practical assignments to understand the micrograph of aluminum Al2O3 metal matrix composite and determine the interfacial strength between the matrix and reinforcement.
