This course covers the fundamental principles of electromagnetics, focusing on Maxwell’s equations, Faraday’s law, Ampere’s law, Gauss’s law, and the concept of electromagnetic fields. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the interaction of electric and magnetic fields with circuits, the behavior of metals when plane waves fall on them, and the concept of skin depth. The course also explores the propagation of uniform plane waves in different media, the behavior of electromagnetic transmission lines, and the principles of electric and magnetic dipoles. For instance, it explains how Faraday’s law of magnetic field interaction can be modeled as a series voltage source in a circuit, and how to calculate the maximum possible radiated field from a wire by dividing it into small dipoles. This course has been developed by Prof. Daniel Mansson and Prof. Rajeev Thottappillil from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden for NPTEL.
