Determination of Fracture and Application of Fracture Mechanics

4-6 HOURS

NPTEL

width=This course covers the comprehensive study of fracture analysis and prevention. It provides an in-depth understanding of different fracture types such as dimple fracture, cleavage fracture, and intergranular fracture, and how these fractures propagate in various materials under different conditions. For instance, the course explains how high-strength aluminum, zinc, and magnesium alloys can experience stress corrosion cracking even under atmospheric conditions. The course also delves into the general procedure of failure analysis, the role of discontinuities in the failure of components, and the application of fracture mechanics in failure analysis. It further discusses the importance of simulated service testing and how evidence collected during failure analysis can help determine the causes of failure.

This course has been developed by Dr. D. K. Dwivedi from IIT Roorkee for NPTEL. It is now accessible through Ansys Innovation Space courtesy of the partnership between Ansys and NPTEL, under the CC BY-SA license. For more details, visit https://nptel.ac.in/courses/112107241.
