This advanced course covers battery system modeling and simulation using the Ansys Twin Builder® simulation-based digital twin platform. It introduces Equivalent Circuit Models (ECMs) for electrical behavior and explores how state of charge and temperature affect performance. You will learn parameter identification using HPPC data and best practices for accuracy. The course also focuses on Electro-Thermal Coupled (ETC) modeling, integrating ECMs with thermal Reduced-Order Models (ROMs) for fast, accurate simulations. Topics include thermal ROM generation from CFD data, MIMO ROMs, and conservative pins for heat transfer flexibility. Practical workflows enable system-level simulations and BMS applications, ensuring validated accuracy and real-time performance.

Learning Outcomes:

Following completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the theoretical foundations and assumptions of ECMs and electro-thermal coupling.
  • Differentiate between ECM architectures (4-parameter, 6-parameter, NTGK) and their applications.
  • Interpret the role of state of charge and temperature in defining ECM parameters.
  • Apply HPPC test data for ECM parameter identification.
  • Generate thermal ROMs from CFD step-response data.
  • Implement conservative pins for HTC adaptability.
  • Integrate ECM and ROM in Ansys Twin Builder for coupled simulations.
  • Create and validate MIMO thermal ROMs for battery packs.
  • Apply ETC models for system-level simulations and BMS applications.
  • Compare lumped ETC models with 3D CFD results for accuracy and performance.
  • Analyse battery electrical performance and heat generation using ECM-based simulations.
