By default, Mechanical assumes the spot weld BEAM diameter is 10 times shell thickness. You can override this to any diameter through Variable Manager; Example: Mechanical Menu > Tool > Options > Variable Manager > RMB to Add In Mechanical, click Tools > Variable Manager > RMB to Add.. Variable = weld diameter Value = 3.0 Note: Use the exact name. Value is a scale factor for default diameter, and not the actual required diameter value Finally, click the ‘Active’ checkbox next to the variable name. For example : Two sheets of thickness 0.5mm is jointed throguh spot weld. The defualt weld diameter would be 10 times 0.5, that is 5.0 mm. If two joining parts are of variable thickness or any complicated geometry then one can understand the default diamter that ANSYS calculated from the input (ds.dat file) Create a Input file ( Tools > Write input …). Open the input file. Search for SECDATA command which shows the default diameter value of the beam element . Let us say it shows default diameter as 5 mm. If the required diameter is 15 mm. Then in Variable manager specify Value as 3.0, such that default diameter of 5mm is scaled 3 times to give final diameter of 15 mm.
