I found in the manual that the ELBOW command will convert straight PIPE289 elements to ELBOW290 “where it is beneficial”. What are the conditions for when it is considered beneficial?

Under the following conditions, pipe to elbow transitioning will done: 1) A straight pipe289 element is next to a curved pipe289 element 2) The section ID’s of the 2 adjacent elements are the same 3) The tangents of the 2 elements at the shared node are within 1 degree. When a transition region is determined, the algorithm marches out along the straight region and converts 289’s to 290’s until a distance of 2 pipe diameters is exceeded. The curved regions will typically have cross-section deformation. We transition these elements so the cross-section deformation can continue into the adjacent straight region.
