For a 2D geometry SpaceClaim creates the surfaces based on the edges information. Activating the sketch mode on the body the faces are removed and the named selections associated are lost. Moving back to 3D mode the surfaces are regenerated. In order to avoid this, one must work in 3D mode. For example, using the Split tool or the Project option to split a face of the body, the named selection would be maintained on the parts the face is split into.
