How are EGR influences on combustion accounted for (only thermal effect or chemical)?

The impact of EGR on combustion is accounted for both chemically and thermally in Forte. You can specify wide ranges of EGR dilution in Forte. The selection depends on your simulation objectives and specification. For in-cylinder-only simulations, we use the % EGR and knowledge about the fuel composition (H/C ratio) to determine the initial conditions in the cylinder that result from mixing of fresh air and exhaust gas.
You can use the Forte Composition Calculator to compute the IVC composition, premixed composition, dual fuel between injections, and the exhaust composition. This will help to come up with the EGR %. The Forte Composition Calculator can be found under the Utility menu and on the Toolbar. When the intake port is included in the simulation, we can include an inlet for fresh air and the exhaust gas at the port. It is also possible to mesh the connection between exhaust port and intake to model the mixing directly. These approaches can get expensive, however, due to the need to track many active species throughout the simulation domain.
