We have an exciting announcement about badges coming in May 2025. Until then, we will temporarily stop issuing new badges for course completions and certifications. However, all completions will be recorded and fulfilled after May 2025.

This example is taken from Cornell University’s ANSYS AIM Learning Modules

A wing with a NACA 0012 airfoil section is supported such that one end is fixed and the other end is free. The wing has a chord of 1 meter, a span of 5 meters, and a thickness of 0.01 meters. The wing is Aluminum 6061-T6. Find the first 6 modes of vibration of the airfoil using ANSYS AIM.

       width=

In this video, you will learn how to:

      • Import the geometry in Discovery AIM
      • Specify thickness of the wing surface to be 0.01m

In this tutorial, we will be using Physics-Aware Meshing. Physics-aware meshing helps automate and simplify your problem setup. With physics-aware meshing, the computational mesh is generated automatically based on the solution fidelity setting and the physics inputs.

In this video, you will learn how to:

      • Change the material of the wing to a new material with the name Aluminum 6061-T6
      • Add a density property of 2700 kg/m^3
      • Add an Isotropic Elasticity property, with Young’s Modulus = 1e7 psi and Poisson’s ratio = 0.33
      • Add a fixed support on two edges of the wing’s end

In this video you will learn how to:

      • View Displacement Magnitude contours for each mode
      • Look at the calculated modal frequencies
      • Refine the mesh and investigate any change in modal frequencies

One of the ways we can check the validity of our analysis is by refining our mesh. If the values for our frequencies approach a limit, then we have arrived at our answer. If the values change drastically when we refine the mesh, then we need to refine the mesh further and we have not yet found an acceptable solution. We will refine the mesh by increasing the Mesh resolution, as in the Numerical Results video.  The table below shows the results from the video.  Since the frequencies do not change, we do not have the refine the mesh further.

Mode Number Frequency (Unrefined Mesh) Frequency (Refined Mesh)
      1 4.6563 4.7554
      2 24..785 25.087
      3 31.701 32.087
      4 37.989 38.247
      5 51.152 49.506
      6 59.988 56.756
