You can click and drag this circle to rotate the model in the same plane as your screen. In other words, it will spin the model as if on a turn table. Aside from this, the only other option for controlling the spinning is to use the Move tool. In this case you would have very specific controls for rotating about the X, Y, or Z axis of the move tool itself.
