Modeling trace points on PCB layer mesh using external data gives an approximate equivalent material property representation on each element. Modeling the Cu trace geometry with contact will constitute a higher fidelity representation and so will be more accurate method and provide more detailed information in calculated results. It doesn’t involve any approximation.
