We have an exciting announcement about badges coming in May 2025. Until then, we will temporarily stop issuing new badges for course completions and certifications. However, all completions will be recorded and fulfilled after May 2025.

Workflow for combining two geometry. 1 from Previous Sims, 1 from Spaceclaim.

I am currently having a workflow issue. I have simplified it down so it is easier to explain.

I have to do a simulation geometry A and geometry B. Geometry A is fixed at the sides and Geometry B is inflated with pressure. Frictionless contact is applied between A and B.

Geometery A is comprised of three shell bodies of differing material properties. But they shared topology and have a coincident mesh. Geometry A is the picture below.

Geometry B is comprised of 1 shell body. Geometry B is the result of previous complex simulations. Geometry B is included into the model with Dynain. Geometry B is the image below.

The issue arises here. I can't combine a Dynain geometry (geom B) with a geometry from spaceclaim (geom A). To get around this I performed a small relevant part of the simulation on Geom A so that I could access it as a Dynain file. I then combined the two Dynain files from Geom A and B.

The next issue arises here. When you access geometry via Dynain any bodies that share coincident nodes are combined into one body. So for geom A, I lose the three individual parts and they are combined into one. This means I can't then apply differing material properties to the parts. See the result of accessing geom A from Dynain below.

      Questions:
      - Can I combine Geom A and Geom B in a different way?

      - Is there anyway to maintain the individual bodies from Geom A after dynain?

      Hello Ben,

You can create geometry A using a Mechanical Model system, import the dynain (geometry B) using an External Model system, and combine them together in an LS-DYNA system:

Note that you will have to rename the dynain file to dynain.k to be able to import it using the External Model system.

Have you tried the above? I am using Ansys WB 2023R1 and the above workflow works.

Also, make sure to set the mesh preference to "Explicit" in the Mechanical Model system:

Let me know how it goes.

      Hi Reno,

Just updated my model and it ran to completion. Thank you so much for this suggestion!

      Kind Regards,

      Ben

      Hello Ben,

Sounds good. I am glad it worked  for you.

      Have a good day!

      Reno.
