Workbench LS-Dyna MAT_JOHNSON_COOK material model issue

      Hello all,

In Workbench LS-Dyna I'm trying to set up an S-ALE problem. I create the material using "LSDYNA External Model" tool with *MAT_JOHNSON_COOK and *EOS_GRUNEISEN models. After running I get the error:

       *** Error 41319 (SOL+1319)
The # 1 ale multi-material which is of material
type 15 has element erosion set. Please define an
vacuum material and make it one of the ale multi-materials
so the failed material could be switched to vacuum.

So, MAT_JOHNSON_COOK model requires dummy vacuum material in *ALE_MULTI-MATERIAL_GROUP to replace it during material failure. The issue is that *ALE_MULTI-MATERIAL_GROUP card is created automatically and filled with materials from ALE bodies material assignments. Each body has only one material assignment. Furthermore, there is no *MAT_VACUUM model in "LSDYNA External Model" tool.

Is it possible to overcome this issue?

      Hi,

I am not sure if you have an ALE Domain set in your LSDYNA WB model.

This ALE Domain will set the surrounding mesh so that the fill material can flow in it.

I guess this should fix the issue. MAT_JOHNSON_COOK and *EOS_GRUNEISEN are now directly supported in the newer versions.

      Cheers, Ram

      Hi Ram,

There is an ALE Domain object in WB LS-Dyna to create a surrounding mesh that the fill material can flow through. Suppose the process runs in the air. What material I should assign to the domain? If it is the air, how to add the vacuum material to the ALE group? The only way I see is to create some dummy body inside the group to introduce the vacuum (by the way this approach works...no error message appears) but I'm not sure that it works correctly from the point of view of physics!

      Thanks
