Which port should I use, lumped or waveport?

      Hi everyone,

I’m new to ANSYS HFSS and need some guidance on simulating a coplanar waveguide (CPW) with a discontinuity due to a via that conducts the signal to a lower level on the PCB. I’m interested in analyzing the impedance of the CPW, as well as the S11 and S21 parameters.

I've noticed that when I use a lumped port, I consistently get 50 ohms as the impedance on all frequency sweep, which doesn’t reflect the actual behavior. On the other hand, when I use a wave port, I see that the size and position of the port significantly affects the simulated impedance.

Could anyone advise me on which port type would be more appropriate for my simulation?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Usually wave ports are recommended to use for this case.

You can find a built-in example in HFSS in the menu File > Open Examples > HFSS > Transmission Lines > Coplanar_waveguide.aedt
