User Material&Surface properties of Metal in SPEOS

I want to create the optical properties of aluminum through the User Material Editor in Speos.

The characteristic of the material I have is complex reactive index(n, k).

In the material file format of Speos, n and alpha(absorption coefficient) must be input, so I converted it into a relational expression of alpha = 4πk/lambda(mm).

However, when I applied the User Material created in Aluminium and set the surface to optical policed, it does not cause reflection.

Whether the unit of alpha is mm-1 or μm-1, it does not cause reflection.

I'd appreciate it if you could help me.

The user material editor can also be used to describe metallic materials. On the general tab change the material type to Metallic. Then the index variation input will change to wavelength and you n and k inputs.

This metallic material definition can only be used for simulation of the reflection component. If you would like to simulate the reflection and transmission effects of an aluminum coating of varying thickness there is a workflow that allows you to describe the coating in Ansys Lumerical and transfer this data for simulation in Speos. More information can be found here: Lumerical Sub-wavelength Model: Introduction and Data Generation – Ansys Optics , and here for application in Speos: Lumerical Sub-wavelength Model: Usage in Speos – Ansys Optics

I ‘m grateful for your help.

I have additional questions about your answer.

When I set the setting to metallic, I can input extinction coefficient, k.

        If so,

will the simulation be accurate even if the characteristics of the transparent material are set to "metallic+index+extinction coefficient"

        instead of "isotropic+index+absorption coefficient?

If you are looking at the reflected light from this material the simulation results will be accurate. But, if you want to represent a metallic material in transmission you will need to use Ansys Lumerical to model the material. If you need help with this process please contact your local Ansys support team.
