Transient Structural Analysis of a rope with retaining ring and hanging ring

      Hello Ansys community,

I want do to do a Structural Analysis of a rope (see attached images).

Specifically, I want to analyse the bending of the rope when a displacement of the hanging ring in z-direction is prescribed on both ends.

However I have troubles defining the contact between the hanging ring and the retaining ring. In reality there is a slight play between the parts that I want to simulate.

When I try to solve the model by prescribing the displacement to the retaining ring directly it works.

I will gladly add more information if needed.

      Looking forward to your responses.

      Marco

      Hi Marco,

As per the error message, it looks like you are facing an element distortion issue and you terminated it. Try to run completely by requesting Newton-Raphson residuals and element violations. Can you share how load is applied for the condition when it fails? Also, how did you model the rope?

      Thanks,

        Hi Akshay,

I meshed the rope via the sweep method

The displacement that I prescribe for the first 9 substeps is as follows (9 of 667 data points over duration of 5s)

As for the Newton-Raphson Residual Forces

        Thank you for your help.

        Marco
