Hi,
I am performing a contact analysis with several beams beeing rotated into contact. The bottom ends of the beams are unconstrained, except the split beams (see picture below) have their nodes coupled with each other to simulate linear periodicity.
Between the beams frictional contacts are set, also between beams and casing frictional contacts are set.
For the first row the simulation kind of works (penetration is a little high, but I can adapt the contact stiffness).
But after this point the simulation fails to converge further supsteps, eventough the solution output states that force, moment and displacement criteria are met during iterations:
In earlier supsteps the solution stops and moves on to the next substep.
What could be the problem here? Are there other criteria I should look at? Or should I use transient mechanical, eventough there should be no further movement after all the beams have arranged?

Hello,
Can you try increasing the number of iterations? Default is 25. Issue NEQIT command under the setup and increase the number of equilibrium iterations to say 50 or 100.

It is a bit strange that the force, moment and displacement criteria show converged but the solution isn't converging. Is there any other error or warning being displayed? Maybe you can share that so that forum members can help you investigate this issue.

Force and moment (and possibly displacement and rotations) are not the only convergence criteria that may be activated. Others include contact penetration, volume (for incompressible materials), strain step size for plastic and creep,.....I feel like I'm missing another but you get the point. It's very possible that while the force and moment convergence criteria have been met some other criteria has not. You'll need to review more of the output.

I already increased the number of iterations up to 100, but the number of predicted iterations till convergence kept increasing along. So this could not solve the issue.
There are certainly some warning messages, but with the same warning messages I was able to achieve a converged solution in similar models. The solver output shows some more warning messages. I have not lokked at alle of them yet.
Twice in the solver output there is an error message about too much penetration after a substep, but after a bisection the substeps keep converging.
The final error message only reads:
Solution not converged at time 0.466149349 (load step 1 substep 61).
Run terminated.@ Mike: where can I check which other convergence criteria are activated and how their values develop over the solution? I could not find them in the solve.out file or the solver output

They should be around the same location as you showed in the screen shot of the output file. Could you screen shot more of the file? Near where you did before.

Can you attach the whole out file? Some of the alternative convergence items are not reported every Newton Rhapson iteration so you need to look at the last iteration of the substep.

Hi Mike,
here is the out code for one hole substep until the bisection. After iteration 15 all three criteria are converged, but it keeps running.
