Hello,
I am currently trying to analyse the impact of different surface coatings on the torque a solid body creates in a static magnetic field. I am running a 3D Maxwell magnetostatic setup for this.
The main body should be nearly neutral (so the torque is only resulting from the coating). My problem is, that the coating needs to be very thin, about 100 nm thickness.
I tried to create solid sheets from the faces of the main body and make their thickness 100 nm. I tried different meshing operations, but either way the meshing caused problems.
I then tried to make only the coating as a hollow shell body with 100nm wall thickness, but I also had problems with meshing this object.
So my question is, is it possible to create such thin layers in Maxwell or am I running into software limitations? If it is possible, what would be the best way to represent this and which meshing operations should I use to make it work? Since I am not very experienced in AEDT / Maxwell, I might have not tried all possibilities with the meshing, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am using Anys Electronics Desktop 2024R1.
Thank you,
Joshua

Hello Joshua,
Could you try to use "Classic" option in intial mesh setting? and enable "Use dynamic surface resolution" if having more difficult surface first.
If the classic mesh cannot resolve the issue, could you try to use eddy current solver? For DC excitation, you could enter a small value for apadtive frequency and it would be close to DC. This solver will support thin gap boundary with relative permeability.

Hello HDLI,
thank you for your response. Unfortunately I was not able to solve the problem yet.
With the classic mesh option and dynamic surface resolution, I still run into errors. I attached a Screenshot from the Message Manager, it seems like it is not able to create the mesh for the thin objects. As I understand it, the reason is the large model dimensions relative to the thin thickness.
I also tried to use the eddy current solver and set the adaptive frequency to 5 Hz (do I need to set a lower or higher frequency to be close to magnetostatic?). With this setup, I deleted the Solids (which I created from the faces in the magnetostatic setup) and made a thin layer boundary on these faces with a thickness of 100 nm and defined a permeabilty instead – this seems to be a promising method but it says “Process ‘3dedy’ terminated abnormally. It may have run out of memory or could have been killed by the user.”. I attached a screenshot of the Message Manager of this setup as well. It should not be a memory issue through licensing, since I am not using a student but a research Licence.
I would be very thankful for any further advice, thank you again for your help so far.
