Maxwell 2D – Twin Builder Co-Simulation: Motor Speed Remains Zero

      I am currently working to perform a co-simulation between ANSYS Maxwell 2D and Twin Builder (formerly Simplorer). However, I have encountered an issue that I have been unable to resolve.

       

       

       

      My workflow is as follows:

      • The motor was initially designed in RMxprt.
      • It was then exported to Maxwell 2D (Transient XY).
      • When I run the Maxwell 2D model by itself, the simulation works perfectly. The motor accelerates normally and reaches approximately 5000 rpm.
      • The problem only occurs when I connect the model to Twin Builder using the FEA Link.

      On the Twin Builder side, my system consists of:

      • 400 V DC supply
      • Three-phase inverter
      • LCL filter
      • Maxwell FEA component

      The three motor phases (PhaseA, PhaseB, and PhaseC) are connected correctly to the FEA component. For the mechanical side, I connected the MotionSetup ports using a torque meter, speed meter, inertia, and mechanical ground, following the ANSYS examples as closely as possible.

      However, during co-simulation:

      • The motor speed (Omega) always remains 0 rpm.
      • The rotor never starts rotating.

      It is important to note that the exact same Maxwell model works correctly when simulated independently, so the motor model itself appears to be valid.

      Additionally, I sometimes receive the following error message:

       
      FEA1: failed to find Norton equivalent
      (check for voltage sources directly connected to windings)
       

      This error does not always occur. Sometimes the simulation starts without this error, but the rotor still does not rotate and the speed remains zero.

      I also found a similar discussion on the ANSYS forum regarding MotionSetup connections. I tried implementing the suggested mechanical configuration, but unfortunately the behavior did not change.

      I would greatly appreciate your guidance on the following questions:

      1. What is the correct way to connect the MotionSetup1_in and MotionSetup1_out ports when using Maxwell 2D with Twin Builder co-simulation?
      2. For a BLDC/PMSM motor operating under no-load conditions, what mechanical components should be connected to the MotionSetup ports?
      3. Why would a motor that runs correctly in Maxwell fail to rotate when connected through the FEA Link in Twin Builder?
      4. What is the root cause of the "failed to find Norton equivalent" error, and how can it be resolved?
      5. Are there any known export settings, FEA Link configurations, or Twin Builder requirements that could cause this behavior?
