SubscriberHello,nI am hoping someone can discuss the fundamental differences between MAT_054 and MAT_058 composite models.nFrom what I have seen, MAT_058 describes a composite as nonlinear elastic whereas 54 depicts the composite as linearly elastic. nIn regards to MAT 58 being a continuum damage model, and MAT 54 as a progressive ply failure, what is the main difference in these solving approaches?nAny insight is appreciated!nn -

Ansys EmployeeWhat you have summarized are correct. Also MAT_54 can only be applied to composite shell elements while MAT_58 can also be applied to solid elements. n -

Ansys EmployeeHi,nnFirst of all, *MAT_054 is the material model used most often to model composite materials because of it simplicity; it is easier to calibrate the material model to experimental data. So, it is usually recommended to start with *MAT_054 and see if you can reproduce your experimental data. If you need a more sophisticated material model, you can use *MAT_058. *MAT_058 can describe the stiffness of composites as linear as well as non-linear. You have more parameters that you can define as a function of strain rate. You also have a choice of failure surfaces. But, this makes *MAT_058 more complex and requires more experimental data. Please refer to the user manual for a description of both material models.nAlso, you can do a 1-element simulation with different loading to see if your material model behaves the way you expect.
