SubscriberHello! I am working on creating a fully-hex mesh for the below geometry. The simulation is predicting the flow through the pores in the geometry, so the green surfaces are walls and the vacant space is where the mesh must go. THe flow comes from the left-side of the image and flows out of the 5 perforated plates. I have originally meshed it with tets, but I feel the geometry can be meshed in ICEM with a hex mesh to have better control over the amount of cells in each pore.
My question is what is a good workflow to mesh the pores without creating too many unecessary splits and spending hours associating the edges to the pores' curves? I have thought of creating the blocking for one pore and copying it to the other pores, but I am not sure how I would connect these smaller blocks to a larger block for the inside and outside surfaces of the geometry.
Thanks!

Forum ModeratorHow do you intend hex meshing the inside region of the main block? Ie between the large round hole and many smaller holes? I can see a way to quad pave in Ansys Meshing, but trying to block that is going to be "fun". However, with a hex mesh you can control the pore mesh, but at the (very high penalty) of not being able to easily grow the cell size into the free flow region away from the pores/jets.Â

SubscriberYeah, meshing between the big hole and the smaller holes will be tough. I am able to make the blocking for that case, though, using the O-Grid tool. The real time-consuming part is the pores.
That is also a good point about the mesh size. The existing tet-mesh is already very fine, so I figured if it was a hex mesh of the same size, we would still have a reduction in the cell count.Â

SubscriberI am solving in Fluent. Why do you ask?

Forum ModeratorHave a look at the thin wall options in Fluent along with poly mesh in Fluent Meshing. You may also want to review porous media options for future studies.Â
