I don't know how to assign the materials. Am working on FRP-FRP, FRP-STEEL for inner and outer column. I have drawn the model on space claim but I don't know how to assign the materials to each inner and outer column.n

December 2, 2020 at 11:45 pmpeteroznewmanSubscribernGreat name.nYou don't assign material in SpaceClaim. Save the file and close SpaceClaim.nOpen Workbench. In the Toolbox on the left is an Analysis System called Static Structural. Drag that out of the toolbox and drop it on the Project Schematic (large blank space).nYou will see a stack of cells. The first one is Engineering Data, double click on that to open it. Now you have a tab where you can define materials. Go back to the Project tab and right click on the Geometry cell. This is where you can attach your SpaceClaim file.nTo build a model with that geometry and the materials you defined, double click on Model. Now you can assign materials, mesh, and define loads and supports. After you solve, you can plot results for axial shortening, stress and strain.nThere are many videos in the Courses section of this site to learn how to build Structural models. nGood day.n

I have defined the material properties on Engineering data, built the Geometry, am on the mechanical APDL interface to model it, however am confused as to what to do next, I have a double skin hollow column, I want the outer skin to be FRP and inner skin to be Steel while the Concrete is between the FRP and Steel, the middle is left as a hollow. Please how do I go about this Sir?n

December 3, 2020 at 6:45 pmpeteroznewmanSubscribernIn SpaceClaim, you only need to draw the concrete. Make a solid with the correct ID and OD of the concrete. Then with the Select Tool, click on the ID face, Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V. Do the same on the OD face. Now you have geometry with two surfaces and one solid. Finally, click on the Workbench tab and then the Share button. This makes it so the mesh on the solid will align with the mesh on the surfaces. Close SpaceClaim.nIn Mechanical, assign a thickness to the surface on the ID, assign a material and configure the offset type. Repeat this for the OD.nWhen you turn on Thick Shells and Beams, you can see that the skin thickness shows up outside the concrete, not inside.nThe apply a Fixed support to the bottom face and a Displacement in -y to the top face and you are ready to solve.nThis is a good way to build the model for operational loads on a column. If you want to load it past that and see things like slippage between the steel tube and the concrete material, you can't see that with this model because of the Share button back in SpaceClaim, which effectively bonded these two materials. Advanced simulation methods can show the relative displacement between the concrete and steel on a model built without using the Share button.n
