Dear all,
I am trying to couple EDEM and Fluent from a wndows batch file. The EDEM should start and connect to its coupling server. The syntax for EDEM to do this is
edem -c -i myfile.dem --cs
--cs means connecting to coupling server with reading the EDEM file. The, there is a message appearing "Awaiting client connection" on the command prompt. My question is how the Fluent must be started in a coupling mode with an external solver? In Windows with GUI, you only need to click the "connect to coupling server" in EDEM and have a lib_EDEM_coupling folder and a journal file in the same directory where Fluent and EDEM files are.Â
Thank you so much,
Mahdi.

I am trying to find out how to start Fluent in a server mode as it might be the solution? 2.1. Fluent as a Server Sessions (ansys.com)
When I am using theÂ
fluent 3ddp -t6 -g -aas
I need that Fluent let the next line in the Batch file that is related to EDEM be executed , so that EDEM can connect to its coupling server.

If you talk to the EDEM support team they should be able to help - there's a coupling set up UDF that they may be able to provide.Â

Hi Rob,
Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, they say they can not help because they have not tested Fluent-EDEM coupling on linux without GUI. They don't have any tutorials about it either. They told me to refer to Ansys documentation to figure it out, and I have been trying to, but no lead yet.Â

Which may not then call EDEM as it won't want to release control. Can you run with the GUI active to see what's called in the background?Â

And having checked with the person on our side who wrote a load of the coupling code. He's not sure how batch would behave, but used to run across platform when testing (Fluent on Linux & EDEM on Windows) with GUI.Â

Hi Rob,Â
Thank you for checking with your colleague.
I have been trying to use GUI on Linux through on my own workstation and also on HPC (through an interactive virtual desktop). I have encountered some errors for compatibility of versions that I am trying to fix. If you would think that running through GUI would give some information, I would record a journal file to see what is being called if this is the correct method to understand the processes. Then, I will share with you as soon as possible.Â
Thank you.

I was hoping more that the GUI would trigger the links and that would help figure out any batch syntax. We're not going to be able to do much as it'll require specialist knowledge which we're not allowed to share on here.Â
Are there functions that require EDEM or would Ansys Rocky do what you need? We can help with the coupling for that and Fluent.Â

Hi Rob,
I have been working with rocky, and i know it is very staightforward to use, but unfortunately our HPC has Red Hat Linux on it which Rocky does not support at the moment. I understood this from communications with you on this forum actually.Â
Any help will be very appreciated.Â

OK, in which case I think you'll need to use the GUI. Unless you can call both codes from Optislang or Twin Builder: we don't have anything more on the coupling as it was always covered by the EDEM team.Â
