Coincident Node Constraint Between Shell and Solid Parts

      Hi there,

I am trying to simulate two parts: one modeled with shell Beta elements and the other with rigid solid elements. I need their nodes to remain coincident throughout the simulation.

I used the Tied Nodes to Solid contact card, but when I run the model check, it shows that no nodes are tied. Could you please help me resolve this issue? Also, do you have any alternative suggestions for defining contact between these two parts under the given conditions?

      Best regards,
      Zohreh

      Hi,

I suppose standard tied options will not work between shell and solid. Please use a penalty-based tied contact, rather than a constraint-based tied contact. This can be accomplished by adding the word "OFFSET" to the contact name, e.g., *CONTACT_TIED_NODES_TO_SURFACE_OFFSET.

As an alternative to using tied contact for permanently bonding a deformable body to a rigid body, one could use *CONSTRAINED_EXTRA_NODES or try with *CONSTRAINED_SHELL_TO_SOLID.

An example is given here https://lsdyna.ansys.com/shell2solid/

      Cheers, Ram
