Bounded plane

      Hello,

I have a complex 3D transient simulation which has several 'door openings' located next to each other. When solving the problem, I want to measure the heat flux through this doorway using the 'enthalpy flow' calculation. However, this requires a plane to be constructed first. This is where the problem starts. I seem to be unable to create a 'bounded plane' which has the same size as the doorway (not the parallelepiped fluent generates by default when selecting bounded plane). The reason why creating a default plane is not desired is that it stretches allong the whole domain and I am emerely interested in the doorway heat flux. Furthermore, creating an interface in the meshing phase and measuring the heat flux this way, is also not possible as the zone uses dynamic meshing. I read something about an iso-surface, but I can not make it work the way I want..

I know how it could be created in CFD post, but since it is a transient 3D model with a lot of elements, I can not computationally afford to work in CFD post and therefore want to create it in Fluent directly.

I hope someone is able to help me,

      Kind regards,

      Robin

I recommend going back to preprocessing stage and create a named selection and use that as interior.

You might use clip in Fluent if this helps to clip whatever you created.

What do you mean with enthalpy flow calculation?

      Dear Amine,

-What exactely do you mean by creating a named selection? Is this inside the ansys meshing software (ICEM)? I suppose you mean I should name the surface I want to measure the heat flux through and than use this named surface for the calculation in fluent? However as I said before, I can not create any surface or named selection inside the door way (in the pre processing stage) since a solid is moving through the doorway (it uses dynamic meshing).

-I will try to use the clip option ones I have the time

-Enthalpy flow or more specifically the 'mass flow rate of enthalpy' as the fluent guide states: ** REMOVED LINK** It is basically a measure of the mass flux through a plane.

Thank you for the response, I will try it asap,

Yes. I still do not understand why this is in conflict with dynamic mesh I guess you want a static door that is why you want to do that on post-processing step

      Dear Amine,

The clipping method worked just as I wanted!

For those who are wondering, I first create a 'reference plane', after which I initialize the solution and start clipping this reference plane:

surface -> iso-clip -> x-coordinate -> give desired name, specify reference plane and corresponding min/max values of x-coordinates

I redo this procedure ones more and clip the previous created iso-clip plane in the z-direction, resulting in a smaller rectangular plane based on the bigger reference plane. The x and z coordinates are chosen such that they capture the desired door way.

      Thank you for helping,

      Robin
