Hello everyone,
I am struggling with modeling a bolted joint connection like the one in the picture below. The connection should connect 2 cross sections. An Omega Section and a C Section. I am working with Ansys Mechanical. The connection should be frictional. I cant find any posts or videos about such a connection. Did someone work on a similar problem or has an idea how to solve this? Thank you in advance.

Hi Ilias,
Thank you for the post. Modeling a bolted joint connection in Ansys Mechanical, especially for unique cross sections like an Omega Section and a C Section, can indeed be challenging. Firstly, it's important to understand the mechanics of bolted joints and how to select bolts for your design. Ansys offers a course that provides a primer on bolt connections, discussing different types of threaded fasteners and their representation, as well as how modeling and simulation can be leveraged in designing bolted connections. Please check the attached link to the AIC course for your reference. It also includes the workshop example which you can refer to.
Intro to Preloaded Bolted Joint Design | Ansys Courses
Bolt Representation in Simulation | Ansys Innovation Courses
In your case, you will need to model the bolt in 3D and then set up contacts as per your requirements. Please check the course as it will give you better insight on how to model bolts.
Thanks,
Akshay Maniyar
